what happened last year when speaker boehner paid a political price. for about two weeks as the republicans looked as if they were obstructing -- blocking essentially the kax preal shift inside their own thinking, and there was a moment, a chief of staff to a freshman republican who, you know, over that weekend and right before christmas on sunday, he had been telling me about how they were ready to fight, fight, fight. and when they had given into the democratic demands, he also said to me, well, i think we just learned our limitations. they don't control the whole place. they can't get everything they want. and i think there was a real -- they touched the stove right before christmas. and they got burnt. and they realized that for the first time. >> in fact, you write in "the washington post" that it was speaker boehner's worst political crisis of his tenure. >> yes. tlut that w there was open public division between mcdonnell who had signed off on during the eric cantor who was wobbling back and forth very unsteppy. they're making the call again on

i think that that's what boehner said there. if it does require higher taxes, let's see what they are. don't start, you know -- don't rush the monkey, and you'll see a better show. >> you think they should get rid of the tax credit for the big oil companies, for example? >> what tax credit do they get? >> credits that they've been debating for the last two years now, whether they should end some of those tax credits that the oil companies have enjoyed. >> well, i don't know the tax credits. the oil companies give the same taxing as the manufacturing does and everything else. so when they talk about the tax credits, i don't quite -- they never -- they talk in vague generalities and don't specifically cite what tax credits you're talking about. i think the oil companies -- the only tax credit that could be that they haven't mentioned specifically is intangible drilling costs. that's an easy one to analyze. you cut the intangible drilling cost, you will cut the cap-ex budget for all the oil companies. that's what it amounts to. it'

senator mitchell, you more or less have been in john boehner's shoes. you were a congressional leader hammering out a tax and spending cut deal with the president of the opposing party. how is what we're seeing now different than what you experienced two decades ago? >> it's similar in terms of the issues, the positions of the parties have been that way for a long time. it's different in several respects. first, when i was there, it was the president who had made the no tax pledge. president bush the first, as you'll recall, made a very famous no tax pledge which he eventually backed off of. in this case, it's the congress. the republicans of the congress specifically, who have made the tax pledge, and the president who is trying to get them to break it. secondly, the numbers are very much reflecting the passage of time. we were very concerned because we thought the budget was going to be -- the deficit was going to be about $150 billion. that shocked everyone into action. then, unlike now, there remains some degree of bipartisanship. there was comity,

you heard dana say, this is a huge black eye for john boehner. i made a deal with the president, nothing below that, you should be excited about this deal. they're saying no way, butdy. that's not enough, we don't want any tax increases. >> the speaker does not want to go over the tax cliff. it would mean a recession. he said, let's keep taxes low for as many americans as we can. and the third thing, he stuck to again and again with the president. give me something i can pass. it is fine for you you to posture, it can't get through the house of representatives. and i think he's showing him that tonight. >> what happens now? do we go off the cliff? if the problem is republicans don't want to vote for any tax increases at all. there won't be anything that democrats will vote for that republicans will vote for. i'm stating the facts here. >> but keep in mind of remember the whole debt ceiling debacle? ultimately we pass ad feel about the far right of the republican didn't support, the far left of the democratic didn't support but the majority did. t

we've seen recently from john boehner and certainly from harry reid this morning. these guys might as well be on other planets about how to solve the medium term debt and deficit problem in the united states. i don't see now, yesterday, tomorrow how they're going to solve this in a month. again, the most important point here -- and i can't overstate this enough -- the president campaigned on a single issue of raising taxes, the top marginal tax rate. he literally didn't talk about anything else. he gets to go to john boehner and say i campaigned on raising taxes and won. >> but keith, do they need to solve it in four weeks? because yield can be kicked down the road. what about a patch? >> the problem is, of course, both cases changed like how many times, brian, throughout the year? growth is back, earnings are fine and stocks are cheap. fiscal cliff was never an issue and we weren't even talking about china in march. now growth has slowed globally. maybe materially so. earnings are a disaster and stocks aren't cheap if you're using the right numbers. so now the bul
